PCASYS - A Pattern-level Classification Automation System for Fingerprints

PCASYS is a distribution of automatic fingerprint classification
software, which is being made available free of charge. Its primary
component is a classifier demonstration program. This demo separates
fingerprint images into pattern-level classes known as arch, left
loop, right loop, scar, tented arch, and whorl. The distribution is
in the form of an ISO 9660 format CD-ROM and a printed report.
The fingerprint classifier uses these modules: segmentor; enhancer;
feature extractor (ridge directions); registration; linear transform,
which applies regional weights and reduces dimension; classifier, a
Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN); auxiliary classifier, which uses
pseudoridges to detect whorls; finally, combiner, a rule that uses the
outputs of the PNN and the pseudoridge program to produce the ultimate
output, a hypothesized class and a confidence level. The program can
be compiled in a graphical version which displays the results of the
processing steps (requires X Windows), and in a non-graphical version
(does not require X Windows, and runs faster).
The distribution contains software for the demo program, and also for
programs that perform an optimization process, and for utility
programs. Source code in the C language is provided. The programs
may be compiled and run on UNIX workstations; they have been
successfully installed on several workstation models. Also included
are data files needed by the classifier (prototype feature vectors,
and transform matrix), and a set of fingerprint images.
