Need application help

Below there is a better discription of my problem (work). In a
repository there are many places to storage goods. in each place there
is a box made of wood, sheet-metal, or plastic which is holded up by a
holding device. These holding devices are made of sheet-metal and have
a shape of a right angle. Below there is a very simple drawing.

There are various kinds of holding devices(different size). The
problem is that these devices can be damaged, distorted, shifted in
horizontal(including the support carrier) or vertical direction. I
want to know the exactly position of each holding device. To get this
information I (want to) use an image processing system. Because of the
big valid tolerance-area(holding devices) I must capture pictures with
a size of 500 mm x 300 mm against the devicesize of 20 mm x 2 mm. As
you can see the holding devices are very small in the picture. Another
problem is the variation of the distance between the CCD-Camera an the
repository. Questions:
* Is it possible to use a kind of matched filters?
* Are there any matched filters which are insensitive (robust) against
distortion and shifting?
* Can you recommend me any papers in this field?
* Are there any papers on the Internet available?
