For automatically learning an object detector, sample images are
needed which depict an object (or several objects) under varying
conditions.

The KIEL Appearance Image Library consists of 60 gray level images
each of the size 512 x 512 pixel. All images depict the same
arrangement of 6 wooden objects together with a robot gripper. This
arrangement has been photographed under varying background and varying
illumination. Alltogether, we used 6 homogeneously colored background
planes, and 9 naturally textured background planes. For each of the 15
background plane we used 4 levels of scene illumination reaching from
bright to dark.
