University of Nottingham
Mixed Reality Laboratory PhD Studentships
Sensing, Tracking and Understanding of Small Group Behaviour

The Mixed Reality Laboratory is a group of leading University of
Nottingham researchers. The focus for MRL’s work is the joint
understanding of technical, human and organisational factors necessary
to develop and evaluate mixed reality technologies and their application
to visualisation, learning, knowledge management, control and
co-operative work. Mixed reality environments aim to integrate the
digital and physical worlds in new ways. They arise from the integration
of advanced technologies such as virtual reality, reactive spaces, novel
i/o devices, video-mediated communication and robotics in large scale,
collaborative situations.

MRL currently has vacant research studentships in the area of Sensing,
Tracking and Understanding of Small Group Behaviour. The project will
explore interaction and tracking techniques that support a small group
of people (two to ten) in primarily unencumbered interaction with
technology. Example applications include:
- a family interacting with a set-top box in their living room as part
of an Inhabited TV show; or
- a work group collaborating around a projected display
Individual students might focus on either:
1. exploring and characterising the domain of small-group interaction or
2. the development of machine vision techniques capable of
- identifying high level features of whole group posture and
movement and/or
- tracking group members and sub-groups over time.
