Intuitive Surgical, Inc. has developed a computer-enhanced minimally
invasive surgery system that uses proprietary electronics, advanced
mechanics, and enhanced visualization to greatly improve surgical
technique and take surgical precision far beyond what is possible today.
The da Vinci Surgical System
( http://www.intusurg.com/products/index.html ) is a revolutionary
surgical technology intended to eliminate the major obstacles to
widespread adoption of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). It is designed
to transform a broad range of open procedures to minimally invasive
procedures by making MIS more precise and easier to perform.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the Systems Analysis group, the Senior Vision Analyst
performs a vital and wide-ranging role in Intuitive's product
development. The group is primarily responsible for generating the
vision processing algorithms, controls algorithms, and user interface
designs associated with Intuitive Surgical products. Their role in
user interface design requires a detailed familiarity with clinical
issues and an ability to perceive products from a customer's
perspective. They perform both externally and internally funded
research into developing technologies in the areas of machine vision,
haptics and sensor fusion. Vision technologies of strong interest to
the company include surgical feature extraction, real-time 3-D
display of sensor or pre-operative data, registration of such data
with the patient, and pre-operative surgical simulation and planning.
The Systems Analysis group is also called upon to provide analytic
assistance to other engineering groups, such as camera calibration or
image filtering algorithms.

Additional ongoing responsibilities include analysis, diagnosis and
support of issues from the field; sustaining systems analysis for
manufacturing and improvement of existing vision and control
code-bases. The successful candidate must excel in a high-energy
team environment and be capable of making sound decisions when faced
with the time pressures and incomplete information typical of new
product development.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
* Doctorate in the fields of machine vision and/or medical imaging, or
commensurate experience
* Additional 4 years experience in industry, with code in released
product
* Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including
design, implementation, debug, verification, validation, and
transfer
* Expertise with 3D and 2D image processing, feature extraction and/or
tracking, and camera calibration
* Strong familiarity with medical imaging technologies
* Additional familiarity with teleoperation principles and robot mechanisms
would be a strong plus
* A strong interest in the medical applications of machine vision, haptics,
and robotics
