Title: CCTV intrusive inspection of pipes. Data acquisition and signal
processing for an automatic detection of objects in a sewer pipe. A
PhD thesis is proposed by the company Lyonnaise des Eaux, in
association with the Centre de Morphologie Mathematique (Mines
paristech, Fontainebleau, http://cmm.ensmp.fr ). This work will take
place in Fontainebleau (France), under a CIFRE contract.

The experience got from analysing sewers CCTV inspection data shows
that the inspection data are inconsistent. Great care is therefore
required in the use of any models for planning of rehabilitation
actions that are based upon CCTV data. Minimizing errors and
uncertainty in CCTV inspection processing is therefore of utmost
importance for planning rehabilitation works and reaching the best
value for the invested money.

In order to describe each stage of the inspection process and the
subsequent data processing requirements, it is necessary to be able to
distinguish between:
* automatic detection of objects (detect any noteworthy object present
in the inspected environment e.g. is the specified object present or not)
* automatic detection of defects (assignment of features to detected
objects and determine the significance of the defect)
The stake of the research project is to perform an automatic detection
of objects in a sewer pipe.

This non-destructive-control problem will be tackled by methods from
(but not limited to) the domain of mathematical morphology, shape
analysis and computer vision. A multiscale analysis is to be performed
to obtain a set of pertinent descriptors ranging from low-level pixel
descriptors to high-level shape and position descriptors. The decision
making procedure will be based on a statistical analysis of the
descriptors.
